Glasgow pubs around Cathcart and Mount Florida
GLASGOW: Cathcart & Mount Florida
The trail uses railway stations on the Glasgow local lines out of Glasgow Central and can be started at Crosshill station and wander down to Cathcart station or in reverse. Two pubs and a sobering walk can be missed out if Crosshill station is replaced by Mount Florida station.
The trail description will start at Cathcart station and go to Crosshill.
Getting off at Cathcart station go down the exit at far end and turn left then left agin on the street. Walk along to the corner and turn down right at the community garden and four minutes down Old Castle Road is The Old Smiddy. Now walk back to the station entrance and past it to the corner where across the road is Beechings Bar.
Leaving Beechings walk under the bridge and up Holmlea Road. Cross over after the park and follow the road as it curves round into Cathcart Road. Along here just under the railway bridge is Clockwork. Leaving here cross the road and turn next left into Battlefield Road. Along here just before the railway bridge is The Florida Park. Continue along Battlefield Road for 5 minutes and look out for Armstrongs which has a small entrance.
Follow battlefield Road along and up a hill where there is a roundabout with The Langside Battle monuement in the middle walk down the hill (past The Chgurch on the Hill) to The Ivory Hotel, then return to the Church on the Hill.
Walk back down Battlefield Road to the large junction with lots of lights and cross over to walk round Prospecthill Rd. reach the end of that (passing entrance to Mount Florida station) and turn right to see Buck’s Bar across the road on the corner. Should you wish to halt here there is another entrance to Mount Florida station down the road opposite the pub.
However, if you want to reach the last two establishments leave Buck’s Bar and turn back and walk 5 minutes up Cathcart St beside Queen’s Park and turn the first left. the next building should be Number 10 Hotel. Leaving here take the road beside the hotel, Queen’s park Avenue and walk up to Cathcart Raod for 10 minutes, past Crosshill station and just beyond Allison St to The Penny Farthing. Return to Crosshill station for home.
A place the size of Glasgow size is bound to have its own guides to illustrate the vast quantity, quality and styles of pubs.

Glasgow guide illustrating top ten pubs in different styles of drinking (and dining) eg Style pubs or Live Music pubs.
Timeout listing of best pubs - controversial
A proportion of the pubs in the city centre and west End have real ale but many do not. The west coast still has a bit of a lager flavour - occasionally only lager. Real ale is not limited to trendy style pubs, and not even in many of these.
Glasgow does not have the tourist grouping of pubs as found in Edinburgh - they are mainly aimed at Glasgow folk.
Local pubs
There is a variety of pubs/hotels on this trail, the surprise being that there is only the one traditional ‘bottom of a tenement’ bar/lounge pub in The Penny Farthing.
A lot of beer gardens, or rather patios, exist as if they are expecting a lot of sunshine in this part of glasgow. These include The Old Smiddy, Beechings Bar roof top patio, The Florida park, Armstrongs, The Ivory Hotel, The Church on the Hill and Number 10 Hotel which is very large and actually has grass and flowers.
Food is more difficult to come upon with Buck’s Bar, The Old Smiddy, Armstrong’s (Pizza & toastie), Clockwork, Number 10 and Church on the Hill all offering food.
Real Ale is more difficult with only The Old Smiddy and Clockwork having it available.
Opening late are Clockwork not till 3pm Mon, Tues & Wed and The Ivory Hotel not til 4pm

Beyond servery and to right of side door are some tables and chairs then it is up a few steps to a larger dining seating area. The pub has a white ceiling with dark beams decorating the whole room with the ceiling low at servery but higher ceiling in rest of room. Further up the side is a large beer garden.

Armstrong’s (Belhaven) has a very narrow entrance which could be easily missed which brings forth a treat of a tardis of a bar. The narrow entrance has booths to left and tables and chairs to the right, then as the room widens out there are some tall tables. At end of the passage is the large dark wood servery. Opposite the servery are some banquette seating and comfy chairs then onward to a tall table seating area with two pool tables beyond that. To the right is the door to a large beer garden patio which is an afternoon sun trap. Also opposite is a mezannine area for functions.
