GLASGOW
15. Kelvinhall subway to Partick subway and back again
There are 23 pub trails in Glasgow. There are eleven trails in the centre of the city, plus five in the West End, three on The Southside across the river and three going East and of course the famous Subway Crawl
Three trails explore three of the main streets in the city centre HOPE St; RENFIELD St and WEST NILE St
Two trails are around Squares; GEORGE SQUARE and the OLD FRUIT MARKET in Merchant City.
Another five, trails take in : QUEEN St & GLASSFORD St, JAMAICA St/ST ENOCH, Around THE TRONGATE, BATH STREET
WATERLOO St & BOTTOM of HOPE St and CHARING CROSS .
Across the river Clyde, on the South side are PAISLEY ROAD WEST , SHAWLANDS and QUEEN’S PARK trails.
Going east are trails for up GALLOWGATE , DUKE STREET, Dennistoun and along to SHETTLESTON
In the West End there are more trails - GREAT WESTERN ROAD two trails covering Great Western Road and Woodlands Road via St Georges Cross to
Kelvinbridge Undergrounds
BYRES ROAD - two trails one down Byres Road and the other using Ashton Lane ,
FINNESTON,
KELVINHALL TO PARTICK - two routes back and forward between Kelvinhall and Partick subway stations
and MARYHILL - two trails split into top and lower
Plus the SUBWAY CRAWL - subway stops and the closest bars.
KELVINHALL to PARTICK and back again
KELVINHALL subway to PARTICK subway and back represents two trails, one going each way, covering 16 pubs going down one side of the main road, Dumbarton Road and up the other. Crossing over, safely, is allowed and may even be desirable if you want to visit all three pubs that sell real ale. There is a pleasant mixture of traditional style pubs that have and have not moved into the new century however, there is little in the way of specialised late-night venues, or cocktail bars or actually restaurants masquerading as pubs. Most of the pubs do offer food all day and many have music in the evening and some on Sunday afternoons.
Practically all of the pubs are open by 12am except Gallus which opens at 1pm. For Bauhuas Partick the website says it opens at 12 but on visits door said 4pm opening. These two later openings suggest that an afternoon crawl covering that side of Dumbarton Road should start from Patrick station to reach these pubs later.
Almost half of the pubs across the trails are on corners. In which case the front to Dumbarton Road is the shorter and the side street has the longer window side. Often these pubs have a door on each side. The real ale pubs are The Three Judges, Gallus and The Lismore.
Partick to Kelvinhall (9 venues)
Although the walk between the two subways is 8 minutes and a straight road the trail will take much longer due to visits many of which require turning up a side street, but not far merely to a next junction.
Leaving the station turn left and walk towards Dumbarton Road. Once there turn left and cross over the main road and turn into Peel St to find The Stumps. Leaving here return to Dumbarton Road and turn left to begin the walk to Kelvinhall down the left-hand side. At the next junction turn left into Fortrose St and on the opposite side at the foot of the last tenement close is The Fiddlers. Return to Dumbarton Road and continue along and in the middle of the next block is Victoria Bar.
Walk on another two blocks and on the corner where the open land of Partick Plaza appears is The Quarter Gill. On the opposite corner of the plaza is The Lismore. Continue along and again turn left into Dowanhill St and find The Sparkle Horse on the corner of the next junction. Return to Dumbarton Road and turning left there is Kelvinhall subway with Bauhuas Partick next to it. Before catching the subway home turn left at next corner into Byres Road and find The Record Factory, just a doorway about six shops up.
Back to Dumbarton Road and turn left, again moving away from the subway, walk up to the next block corner to Gallus. You can now return to the subway and home.
Walking further on from Gallus, 5 minutes away is Brewdog which is part of the Kelvingrove trail going down to Exhibition Centre train station.
The Record Factory pub is on Byres Road and therefore is on the Byres Road trail.
Kelvinhall to Partick (9 venues)
Although the walk between the two subways is 8 minutes and a straight road the trail will take much longer due to venue visits, however most of this side’s pubs are on Dumbarton Rd.
Coming out of Kelvinhall subway turn left to go to the crossroads to cross over to the other side. As you wait and look left you will see diagonal opposite the first pub, The Three Judges. After here, staying on left side, walk towards the subway entrance where directly opposite it is The Dolphin and then on the next corner The Bag O’Nails.
Walk on past the next corner and in middle of next block is Storm Queen. At the next corner down is The Smiddy Bar and a few doors along is The Tenement Bar. A few blocks along and there is the road (Merkland St) to the station, however we are going to walk by and visit another three pubs, before reaching to the station. There is a railway bridge running over the road and just before it is the Deoch An Dorus. Walk past this pub, leaving it to last. Walk under the bridge and walk on to The Windsor Tavern and then on the corner The Rosevale Tavern. Now return to Deoch An Dorus and then to station.
A place this size is bound to have its own guides to illustrate the vast quantity, quality and styles of pubs.
Glasgow guide illustrating top ten pubs in different styles of drinking (and dining) eg Style pubs or Live Music pubs.
Timeout listing of best pubs - controversial
A good proportion of the pubs have real ale but many do not. The west coast still has a bit of a lager flavour - occasionally only lager. Real ale is not limited to trendy style pubs, and not even in many of these.
Glasgow does not have the tourist grouping of pubs as found in Edinburgh - they are mainly aimed at Glasgow folk.
Practically every pub offers food at lunch or all day
