SKIPTON
Skipton is a market town in North Yorkshire of about 14,000 people, although this increases on market days.
Skipton is a market town in North Yorkshire of about 14,000 people, although this increases on market days. These are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday when the wide High Street has market stalls down either side. Apart from market stalls this little town has many shops, lots of them local. The town centre has many places for snacks or main meals to cater for tourists and market day visitors.
The Leeds-Liverpool canal, with many canal boats and boat trips, running through the town adds to its attractiveness. There is also Skipton castle at the top of the High Street.
Skipton is easily reached by road from Leeds or along the A65 from the M6. It is also on the Leeds-Carlisle railway.
There are 25 drink establishments and where you start depends on how you reach Skiption: By Railway - start at Herriot's Hotel across the street; by bus start at Flutez and Fizz across the street from the bus station; or by canal start at the Boathouse.
Where you want to visit depends on your taste and time (and time includes opening times/days).
For the purpose of this tour design the guide starts at The Boathouse beside the canal. All the best pubs are at the start so that if you can only do the first half you hit most of the best. Then walking to the right along the canal and up towards the bridge and crossing over follow the canal to The Royal Shepherd. Turn back and when you get to the bridge (do not go over it, but turn left. Then turn left again up an alley to you find The Narrow Boat.
Back to the road and up the next alley to The Beer Engine. back to the road and along a step or two is The Yorkshire Rose. Directly round from here is The Cock & Bottle beer garden. Leaving by the front door cross over the road and along a little is Skipton Sound Bar. Cross back over and go round the corner to the left and up the high street. The Wooly Sheep is at the bottom and, staying on the left, near the top is The Black Horse. Just a little along is Alexander's Bar & Kitchen and rounding the corner is Two Sisters bar & Kitchen.
Continue round the corner and walk down the hill crossing over the canal and across the road on the corner is Ackroyd's Wine Bar. Crossing to the other corner is 5Pies. Now walk back up towards the High St and find The Castle Inn.
Back on the high Street cross over to the opposite side and first left takes you to Les Bistro des Amis. You could continue on through the large car park ahead and at the end of it a building housing .......or you could just return to the High St and The Red Lion.
Continue down and turn left to walk along Otley St to The Albion Inn. Now walk down the lane opposite The Albion. At the foot of this lane is Boutique 25 a small hotel with a basement bar 25 Below and a small bar area at restaurant.
Across the road you should see Wetherspoon's The Devonshire and a few doors along from it, in stark contrast, the micropub Early Doors.
Continue back Newmarket St to the High St and just follow the road round at the roundabout and then at the lights. As you come towards the bus station opposite it is Flutez & Fizz. Slightly further on and at the end of the bus station is The Fleece. Walk through the bus station and take the pedestrian bridge over the canal and walk down Gas Street. At the end of it is The Craven on the left and The Railway on the right.
Walk up the other side of The Railway and come across The Venue. Leave here and continue up the road and turn right towards Morrisons and the station where Herriot's Hotel is.

What's in a name?
The Albion
An ancient name for Britain. Perhaps after the eldest daughter of the king of Syria, called Albia. He cast his fifty daughters adrift because on their wedding night (all the same night) they murdered their husbands. They ended up landing in what is now Britain and settled down as a tribe called after Albia.
see 'All About Pub Signs' Inn Sign Society
