GLASGOW: Maryhill
LOWER
Take the subway to St George’s Cross. Turning right when exiting the subway onto St George’s Place then quickly right onto St George’s Road. Just off to the left is The Castle Vaults. Returning to St George’s Road walk up it, crossing over N Woodside Rd and then up to the lights at Garscube Rd. The Tower should be seen across this junction.
Leaving here, cross the junction and walk up Garscube Rd. About 8 minutes up on the left ide is The Star and Garter. From here continue up Garscube Rd which eventually merges onto Maryhill Rd. Not long after this joining is Munn’s.
From here walk further up Maryhill Rd coming to Maryhill Fire Station. Although, on the corner across the road is The Botany Bar make a left turn and down the road at the side of the fire station. A gap for pedestrians takes you to Kelvinside Avenue. At the end of this road on the corner is The BrewHaus.
Now return to The Botany Bar. When leaving here walk down Maryhill Rd curving round so not to go back down Barscube Rd. This eventually takes you to The Woodside Inn at the end of a run of shops.
Cross over and continue down Maryhill Rd and at the next crossroads is The Royalty. Leaving continue down Maryhill Rd to reach the subway.
History
UPPER
Take the train from Queen St Station to Maryhill Station. Come out the station onto Maryhill Rd and turn right to walk down it. Cross over to the left and at the next corner is The First and Last. The Ram’s Head is opposite, and we will return to it later. Continue down Maryhill Rd past the disused Maryhill Tavern and six minutes should take you to Kelvin Dock. When finished here another six minutes should get you to The Punch Bowl.
Leaving here, ignore Harvey’s, and continue down for ten minutes to The Viking. Now cross over the road and walk back up Maryhill Rd to The Lockhouse. Cross over and continue up and in a couple of minutes return to Harvey’s Bar.
It is now the longest walk on the trail back up to The Ram’s Head. To finish off the trail it would be tempting fate not to have a last visit in The First and Last. This returns us to the station.
A place this size is bound to have its own guides to illustrate the vast quantity, quality and styles of pubs.
CAMRA in Glasgow
Glasgow guide illustrating top ten pubs in different styles of drinking (and dining) eg Style pubs or Live Music pubs.
Timeout listing of best pubs - controversial
A good proportion of the pubs have real ale but many do not. The west coast still has a bit of a lager flavour - occasionally only lager. Real ale is not limited to trendy style pubs, and not even in many of these.
Glasgow does not have the tourist grouping of pubs as found in Edinburgh - they are mainly aimed at Glasgow folk.
The Castle Vaults
Castle Vaults
A small one roomed pub with curved servery to the right. Banquette seating to the left with small tables. Stools around the bar
Heavy:
Lager: Tennent’s; Carling, Stella
Cider Strongbow Guinness
The Tower
The Tower has a small frontage with some outside tables. The entrance door is in the middle and inside looks and feels like a modernised and comfy one roomed bar. Black banquette seating with round and rectangular tables run down either side with servery and stools in the far-right corner. Large TV screens are on the walls.
However, this bar has a secret out behind it. Going out the rest rooms door and along a short corridor takes you to a large outside space which runs the length of the block either side of the bar front reaching the road around the corner. To the left there is a large, raised stage. The walls behind the stage and along the back have large, coloured murals of singers. The main space in front of stage and running the length of the rear has lots of tables under large canopies.
The bar has an arrangement with next door pizza place for food.

The Star and Garter
The Star and Garter, when it was The Garscube Bar , probably had a door to each side for bar and lounge but now both doors take you to the same room. This has a small island servery with a middle gantry. At one point it even had a lounge next door but this was knocked down. In the right door there is some green banquette seating in corner, then stools along the wall with a shelve running along it for glasses. There is more banquette seating along the back and down other side which is wider. The wooden counter has brass foot rail. Floor is tiled with some carpet at rear sitting area . The walls are dark wood for the first third then a red and cream wallpaper which has Partick Thistle memorabilia on them.

Munn’s
Munn’s has a large bar area. From the entrance there is a large room on both sides and the servery, with stools along it, against the right hand side of the far wall. Sight of the tall servery is blocked a little by central pillars with shelves for glasses. To the left of the entrance is an area for pool and darts with screen shelving around sides for drinks while to the right is banquette seating with rectangular tables along the wall. Out the back of the bar is a large outside grassy area with some picnic table style seating. Tiled floor and wooden walls with light grey paintwork and darker grey trimming.

The BrewHaus
BrewHaus beer garden is on the corner and the entrance to pub just around it. There is some orange banquette seating right inside the door, then comfy booths along both walls. There are three high round barrel tables in middle of room and past these on the back wall is the attractive servery. At the end of the booths along to the right are stairs up to a mezzanine seating area over looking the bar area. Upstairs also has a pool table and dart board.
To the left of the servery there is the entrance to the large outside patio area with lots of tables. Curving along the left of the outside seating are six small sheds with windows and set up with tables, chairs cushions and lighting inside; for that inside and warm but out in the patio area feeling. The pub is child and dog friendly.
BrewHaus is known as ‘the pub fron Trainspotting’. As The Crosslands it featured in the film Trainspotting from 1996. It was later known as The Kelbourne Saint becoming the BrewHaus in 2022.

PLACES TO VISIT WITH PUBTRAILS
The towns and villages highlighted on this web site have a wide variety of pubs and beers in them. All of the places are great to visit, whether for a day or longer, and most have tourist attractions for all of the family.
There is a large variety of pubs throughout the different towns shown below. Some you may wish never to visit again but even discovering these can be interesting. There are pubs that you would not take your wife into. While some you could not take your girlfriend into. A few you would not take either into. However, most of the pubs are very pleasant.

The Botany Bar closed
The Botany Bar is a bar/restaurant situated all by itself. The two entrances both go to the same thin room with the servery, with stools, in the middle if the back wall. Outside to the right is a decking area with booth like spaces with seating and low tables. Inside the right side door there is some seating at small round tables and to the left there is seating and tables some round some rectangular all with comfy seats along the window and there is the start of the servery on the back wall. The décor is light grey for top two thirds and darker grey on wood to the wooden floor. The wooden counter has a tiled front.
Continue along the servery to approach the left door where the wall is bare brick and has a fireplace. There are a few amusing sayings dotted around the wall. The servery stops before the wall allowing tall tables and a passage through to the dining room area.
This has lots of dining seating and is glass walled on two sides so very light and bright.

Long and thin, the servery is on the first half of the rear wall. The door on the corner enters into some seating to the right and the servery on right against the long wall. There are a lot of stools along the brown wooden counter. There is some seating and tables opposite the servery running along below the windows. The tiled floored servery stops halfway along the wall where the side door opens in to a wooden floor. Beyond the servery and to left of door is a large carpeted darker lounge area with banquette seating, tables and chairs. Seating and carpet are of a tartan pattern. Food is also offered.

The Royalty Bar
The Royalty Bar is a corner pub where both doors enter to a triangular room with the servery against the far wall. Down the left side of the bar and around behind it is a lounge. The bar area has a dark brown counter, a gantry full of shot bottles and banquette seating around the walls with the right-hand area seating showing red, white and blue. As in many small Glasgow bars a hidden lounge is round behind the bar. This has a small counter with a lovely shining mirrored gantry at the far end and rows of rectangular tables and banquette seating down each side. The Royalty is getting close to Great Western Road and the selection of lagers and shots reflects the increased availability of not just local clientele. It is not shy about letting customers know what entertainment is on and what drinks are available. Nor does it hide its football loyalty.
