The top ten beer producing companies in the world - website

Anheuser - Busch Inbev, Heineken, Kirin Brewery Co. (Japan), Asahi, Molson Coors Brewing Company, Carlsberg, China Resources Snow Barrels (China), Tsingtao Brewery Group (China), Beijing Yanjing Beer Group (China), Groupe Castel (French).

Not all of these brewing companies have a large presence in British pubs.

    a) Best selling beers in the world - website

Snow (only China), Budweiser, Tsingtao, Bud Light, Skol, Heineken, Harbin, Yanjing, Corona, Coors Light

    b) Best selling beers in the UK website

A lot depends on whether you are measuring volume sold or value of the sales. Of course the correlation between sales and best tasting is an ongoing argument.

Lager: Carling, Fosters, Carlsberg, Coors, Stella Artois, Peroni, Birra Moretti, San Miguel, Tennent’s and Amstel are all in the mix

In 1963 lager had 2% of the market. Heineken and Carlsberg were trying to sell their lager in Britain but not gaining much interest (even with lime added). British companies could see the writing on the wall; Carling stepped up advertising and distribution, Inde Coope introduced Skol and Guinness/Scottish & Newcastle/Courage /Bass formed Harp lager. Advertising switched away from women to men and pints. Lager sales began to grow, a little. In 1965 Skol solved the issue with pouring lager at a reasonable speed and by 1971 lager had nearly 10% of beer sales (20% in Scotland). In the mid-seventies Heineken became the best known lager in the country, though at lower strength than in Europe, following a successful ad campaign “Heineken refreshes the parts that other beers do not reach” (campaign background) (advert). By 1976 it was 25% (40% in Scotland - so much for a hot country drink). McEwan’s Lager, Stela Artois, Fosters (again lower strength) and Castlemaine XXXX from the big six breweries who had the pubs and distribution to get them to market. By 1979 lager was 29% of sales, 43% in 1986 and finally over 50% in 1990.

    Lager’s story in Britain

Cask: Doom Bar, Green King IPA, London Pride, Abbot Ale, Landlord, Wainwright, Pedigree, Tribute, Ruddles Best , Bass

Bitters: John Smiths, Tetley’s, Worthington’s Cream Flow - none of which beat the top ten selling lagers.

The website also shows popularity of Craft Beer, Ciders, Wines and Spirits.

And, of course, Guinness is the beer found in most outlets and was announced as best selling, by value, beer in the UK just overtaking Carling Lager
