GLASGOW: GALLOWGATE

At the far end of Argyll St is The Tollbooth Steeple with the clock on it. Further on from this as the Trongate becomes Gallowgate and just down on the left is the Chrystal Bell and opposite here under the railway bridge is MacKinnon's, now closed. Come back to the steeple and opposite it by the lights is The Tollbooth, obvious on the corner. Out the side door and down left on Saltmarket and under the railway used to be The Old Empire. However, on leaving The Tollbooth by the corner door, turn right down London Rd. Just along to the right just before the bridge was the now closed Spirit. Four minutes down London road on the left at a corner is the Braemar. Leaving here continue along London Road until you reach Kent St on the left and turn up it. Here you will find Trader’s half way up and 226 Gallowgate at the end on the right corner.

Continuing on across the road you will see The Gate, Bar 67, Van Winkle and The Hoops (now closed). Opening times for the first three vary and don’t match google maps but late week afternoon crawls did not find then open. Continue up and reach Hielan Jessie at the crossroads.

{Five minutes along the road from here are The Wee Man’s Bar and The Drover Bar. However these may be best left to the Duke Street, Denniston crawl as they are near a station associated with it.}

Go round the side of Hielan Jessie walking down and round Claythorn St to the right which brings on the left, set back, and hard to miss is St Luke’s and The Winged Ox. Continue down Bain St and turn next left back onto London Road again. Walk along London Road to reach the Calton Bar and opposite West Brewery Bar at the park entrance. Return and walk down London Road to The Crimson Star, then The Windsor Bar. Opposite here is the station back to Glasgow central. However if you walk down past the station onto Main St you will find The Scotsman Bar at the next corner.

Now return to the train station and head home.

A place this size is bound to have its own guides to illustrate the vast quantity, quality and styles of pubs.

CAMRA in Glasgow

Glasgow guide illustrating top ten pubs in different styles of drinking (and dining) eg Style pubs or Live Music pubs.

Timeout listing of best pubs - controversial

A good proportion of the pubs have real ale but many do not. The west coast still has a bit of a lager flavour - occasionally only lager. Real ale is not limited to trendy style pubs, and not even in many of these.

Glasgow does not have the tourist grouping of pubs as found in Edinburgh - they are mainly aimed at Glasgow folk.

Practically every pub offers food at lunch or all day

The Chrystal Bell & Co

The Chrystal Bell & Co is a one roomed corner pub with entrances from both sides. From the 31 Gallow gate entrance the bar comes out from the far wall in a small horseshoe shape. There are booths down the left-hand wall and in the far-right hand corner is seating and the other entrance. Along the windows overlooking the Gallowgate is a raised seating area, up a couple of steps, with padded banquette seating and tables. This makes a lounge area apart from the main bar area in front of the servery counter.  All floors are wooden and there is a high ceiling with cornicing. There are TVs on the wall and stools at counter.  An “old man’s pub”, with prices reflecting that, that has been restyled with new furnishing but still has the old flavour. When the curve straightens there is the other entrance and the next room. This is a longer, but still curving room, with blue banquette seating along the left-hand wall. This room is served from the end of the counter.

Bright, cheerful and cheap prices.

Although servery and seating area are nice with dark wood furniture and plenty of light from the windows above head level the look is distressed ceiling and flaky paint. Behind the servery the distress is taken to a new level with bricks supporting concrete stairs going up behind the back wall and tiles from the old stair walls along the side.

PLACES TO VISIT WITH PUBTRAILS

The towns and villages highlighted on this web site have a wide variety of pubs and beers in them.  All of the places are great to visit, whether for a day or longer, and most have tourist attractions for all of the family.

There is a large variety of pubs throughout the different towns shown below. Some you may wish never to visit again but even discovering these can be interesting. There are pubs that you would not take your wife into. While some you could not take your girlfriend into. A few you would not take either into. However, most of the pubs are very pleasant.

Behind the counter is a large attractive wooden gantry.  There is some seating up a step to the right of the door and then the counter begins. To the left of the door and along the left wall is banquette seating which is almost booth like as pillars cut off every two seats. The seats are served by modern wooden square tables and chairs. Along the counter are cold metal stools. The lounge door from down long side opens into the same room but is closer to the rear sitting room now equipped with a pool table.

St Luke’s and the Winged Ox

St Lukes and the Winged Ox is an award winning bar/restaurant set it what would have been the church hall of St Luke’s. The main church is now an events venue.

In through the side door via a corridor of event posters then to a large rectangular room with high ceiling and the servery at the far end.

There are booths down either side and in the centre of the room is a variety of seating; tall tables opposite the counter, an armchair area after this then a couple of rows of rectangular dining tables. There is a mixture of wood and industrial furnishing. The tables and floor are wooden with the floor being particularly distressed while the tables are supported by scaffolding like legs. The ceiling has metal racks supporting lights and fairy lights, and the servery has piping supporting some taps and other taps on the back tiled wall. However, the mixture works well together.

Outside seating entrance at top right.
