OBAN

Oban is found on the west coast of Scotland in a bay, in the Firth of Lorne, which is sheltered by the island of Kererra.

Oban is found on the west coast of Scotland in a bay in the Firth of Lorne which is sheltered by the island of Kererra. Oban can be reached by train from Glasgow or Edinburgh or by road entering the town on the A85.

Oban (An t-Oban in Gaelic) is a main ferry terminal for Caledonian-MacBrayne ferries to many islands, including Mull and Coll.

Around Oban are several castles, Dunollie and Dunstaffinage. Oban has a distillery and a museum, and overlooking the town is McCaig's Tower. The port also has many different trips to see wildlife around the coast and nearest islands as well as ferries to further out islands.

The isle of Mull is a popular island to visit with Durat Castle and the picturesque Tobermory. It is also the link to the island of Iona.

Visit Oban Isle of Mull Ferries

A tour of the pubs (marked with the purple indication points on the map) will start at The Caledonian Hotel immediately opposite the railway station. Oban has been badly hit by five closures (Black icons) although there have been some openings (orange icons). Leave here and turn left and walk around and away from the bay. At the roundabout there is The Royal Hotel on the opposite corner. On leaving here turn right and go around the corner of the hotel onto Aird's place. Along here is Aulay's Bar.

Now walk on and go towards Oban Bay. On the waterfront is the Palace Hotel followed by Cuan Mor. Cross over and continue round the bay to The Harbour Bar now a Bistro (Columba Hotel) . Further along the bay is The Cellar Bar (Regent Hotel), Find Coasters, still in the main town, further along the bay. After here there is a walk along the Corran Esplanade passed the Alexandra Hotel (only residents) and St Columba's Cathedral to three hotels The Lancaster, The Oban Bay and The Queen's in quick succession. Visit The Oban Bay first, then walk on to The Queen's and return to The Lancaster. Now return to the town where instead of going along the bay go along the next road up. At the roundabout there is the small Victoria Crescent in front of you. The right hand side of the building has Markie Dan's.

Leaving here walk back along to Coasters and turn up the side street beside it. Cross over the road and go a little up the hill the find O'Donnell's. Leaving here return down the hill and turn left to go along George St to The Tartan Tavern and opposite it The Rowan Tree Hotel (Steakhouse).

From The Rowan Tree Hotel continue along George St and turn up first left to find The Balmoral Inn (bar of The Balmoral Hotel). Go back to George St and continue along the road passing the Cuan Mor (or stopping again) and turn right up Argyle St. Turn left at the end of this short street and walk down to the Woodside Hotel bar. From here walk around, passing the Woodside Hotel Lounge (The Creel) and keep walking along the curve of the road keeping to your left. Alongside the river is The Lorne Bar. Turn left and walk along to the main road and turn left. The Lochavullin is along this road on the left.

Cross over and return towards the town eventually reaching the roundabout where The Royal Hotel was. Cross over to reach Shore St and walk down this road passing the pub McCaig's Return (we will return). Follow the road round and walk along to The Kelvin Hotel. Leave here and return to McCaig's Return. On exiting this pub there is a small and short alley opposite it. This takes you to the clock tower outside the station.

However, there are two places to visit between the station and the pier. Almost next to each other is The Olive Garden and Sloans at the Waterfront restaurant and bar. This leaves you next to the station.

Pub Info.

Lots of large hotels welcoming non-residents
